Crossing the street, you knock at the door of the squat black
building, and they open it and let you in.
The Cup and Hen is an old tavern on Water Street, kept by Mrs. Elbe and her sons. The rooms are large but not well lighted. One of the few telephones in the Dun Quarter sits in a place of honor at the end of the bar. Hung on the walls are framed black-and-white photographs of Elbes in uniform, Elbes standing with their tools by small grey buildings, Elbes being wed, holding children, carrying coffins. Stairs lead up to the second story.
