The Chairman is a small man, intent, balding, significant
because he is Portia Gutman's husband, because he is therefore
the Chairman, because he is able to hold together certain alliances,
because he is discreet and self-effacing.
He is not in when you call, of course, and his assistant
is not available, but his assistant's assistant tells you
that he wishes you well, that he and his wife are thinking
of you, that they appreciate the urgency and the delicacy
of your mission.
The voice of the assistant to the assistant to the Chairman
is young and soft, but also firm, confident, more than anything
else healthy, and you think for some reason of the shiny
tabletops in the west cafeteria at the Technicate.
As you are saying goodbye, the connection becomes weak,
and then is cut off.
